Home remedies for dry, brittle hair, dandruff: Add these 7 Omega-3-rich foods in your daily diet
Dry, brittle hair that breaks easily. A scalp that feels itchy and flaky. Hair loss that is unstoppable. These subtle but troubling signs could indicate a deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that your body cannot produce on its own. These polyunsaturated fats are vital for various bodily functions, including brain health, inflammation control, heart health and also hair health. There are three primary types of omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), found in plant oils, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), commonly found in marine oils (Image: Canva) According to research, omega-3 deficiency can have several adverse effects on hair health. A lack of omega-3s can lead to a dry and flaky scalp, which hinders hair growth and can cause hair to become brittle and prone to breakage. Omega-3 fatty acids help to nourish the hair follicles, promote circulation in the scalp, and stimulate the production of healthy, strong hair. They also have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce hair loss caused by inflammation. Here are 7 foods to boost your omega 3 intake and improve your hair health: (Image: Canva)Salmon: Rich in EPA and DHA, salmon is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Regular consumption can help improve scalp health and promote shiny, strong hair (Image: Canva)Chia seeds: Chia seeds are a great plant-based source of omega-3s. They are high in ALA, and can be easily added to smoothies, yogurts, and salads to boost your intake (Image: Canva)Walnuts: Walnuts are another excellent source of ALA. These nuts also contain biotin and vitamin E, which are beneficial for hair health.Flaxseeds: Ground flaxseeds are rich in ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid that supports hair health by reducing inflammation and improving moisture. You can easily add them to your diet by roasting or mixing them into sandwiches, cereals, baked goods, or smoothies (Image: Canva)Algal oil: If you prefer plant-based options, algal oil, derived from algae, is an excellent source of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which is essential for brain and heart health. Research indicates that DHA can also promote healthy hair growth by improving scalp circulation and reducing inflammation (Image: Canva)Soyabean: Soybeans, including tofu and tempeh, are high in ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid that supports heart health and reduces inflammation. ALA can also promote hair growth by nourishing hair follicles. They are versatile and can be used in stir-fries, soups, and more, providing both omega-3s and protein (Image: Canva)Cod liver oil: It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, which support hair health by nourishing follicles and improving scalp circulation, promoting stronger hair growth while reducing dandruff and dryness. Additionally, it contains vitamins A and D, essential for hair health (Image: Canva)
