As the summer comes, so do the summer's favourite fruits and vegetables. One such that many of us are nostalgic about is kacchi kairi or raw mango, which can be whipped in many ways and is a staple in many households as the summer sets in. But many people also refrain from having it because it may cause digestive issues if taken every day. So, we decided to turn to experts to find out what happens if you have kacchi kairi or raw mango everyday.

Dr Ranga Santosh Kumar, consultant general physician and diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad said that as an antioxidant, raw mango is largely gastroprotective. "Consuming raw mangoes can positively impact various aspects of health, attributed to its rich nutritional content. Mangiferin, a potent antioxidant found in raw mangoes, exhibits hepatoprotective properties, suggesting potential benefits for liver health," said Dr Kumar.

The abundance of vitamin C in raw mangoes is crucial in reducing the risk of blood disorders such as haemophilia and anaemia. Additionally, it contributes to preventing blood clot formation, enhancing the elasticity of blood vessels, and supporting the haematopoiesis process, said Dr Kumar.

According to Dr Kumar, the high concentration of carotenoids in raw mangoes may contribute to improved eyesight, promoting eye health and vision.

Furthermore, the hydrating properties of raw mangoes make them effective in preventing dehydration, especially during the hot summer months. "Raw mangoes also have the potential to address issues like bleeding gums and scurvy, thanks to their nutritional composition.

These juicy fruits act as a natural remedy for common gastrointestinal ailments, including constipation and indigestion, owing to their fibre content and digestive properties," said Dr Kumar.

With a combination of vitamin E, vitamin C, and antioxidants, raw mangoes serve as an excellent immunity booster. These components work synergistically to support the body's defense mechanisms. "Incorporating raw mangoes into your diet can thus offer a range of health benefits, promoting overall well-being and supporting various bodily functions," said Dr Kumar.

What to keep in mind?

Unripe mangoes contain a high amount of vitamin C and pectin, which can be beneficial for your immune system and digestion. However, unripe mangoes also contain a substance called urushiol, which can cause irritation in the mouth, throat, and digestive system, especially when consumed in large quantities, described Dr Kumar. "Additionally, the high levels of citric acid in unripe mangoes can potentially lead to stomach irritation and gastric issues when consumed in excess," said Dr Kumar.
