HOW TO: TAKE CARE OF LARGE AND EXTRA LARGE DOG BREEDS
Fulfilling the needs of your large and extra-large fur babies requires specific knowledge. Here are some essential care tips and common mistakes that should be avoided:
WHAT TO DO?
Proper exercise: Large dogs need open space and regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Dedicate at least two-three hours of outdoor playtime for your dog spread across the day
Balanced nutrition: It is a myth that the more animal protein your dog gets, the healthier it is. Too much meat may cause heart problems for your dog. Talk to a vet, do some research and ensure a diet tailored to their size and breed
Training and socialisation: Some large dogs are one-master breeds and may get aggressive towards others if proper socialisation and training is not done
Adequate space and comfort: Provide spacious living areas and comfortable bedding suitable for their size. If your dog sleeps on a bed too small for their size, they may develop joint pain, hip dysplasia or arthritis
Regular veterinary check-ups: Large dogs are very vulnerable to heart diseases, dilated cardiomyopathy, wobbler syndrome, etc. Schedule routine check-ups to monitor their health and catch any issues early
WHAT NOT TO DO? Overfeeding:
Neglecting exercise: Lack of exercise can lead to depression, boredom and destructive behaviour in large dogs; they may also turn aggressive
Ignoring behavioural issues: Address any behavioural problems promptly to prevent them from escalating. It is extremely important to train large and XL dogs properly, starting from a young age.
