Lifestyle tweaks are warranted for holistic health. Having said that, while we may be eating healthy and working out, many of us tend to commit common mistakes that may not go down well with our overall health. Detailing some of these, Yoga teacher Riya Ajmera shared a list of mistakes that are an "absolute no-no for me".

*When we choose to gulp down water in a rush, standing as if there's a train we can't miss, our bodies signal an emergency of sorts. According to Dr Imraan Khan (PT), consultant head physiotherapist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, this behaviour leads to water passing through our system too fast, as a result, the digestive juices, which are responsible for breaking down food into nutrients our body can use, become diluted. So, it's better to drink water slowly and while sitting down for good digestion, said Dr Khan.

*Consuming tea or coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate Pitta dosha, causing discomfort and digestive issues. They’re pretty acidic and can aggravate acidity further. Starting the day with warm water can help maintain digestive balance, Ajmera said. Agreeing, Dr Shanmugam, assistant chief medical officer, Jindal Naturecure Institute said drinking tea or coffee on an empty stomach can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels, especially if sugar or sweeteners are added. "Both tea and coffee have diuretic properties, meaning they can increase urine production and potentially lead to dehydration, especially when consumed without food to provide additional fluids," said Dr Shanmugam.

*Dr Khan described that bending over from the waist to pick up objects can strain the lower back, especially if done frequently or with poor posture. "Instead, bending the knees or squatting to lift objects reduces the strain on the spine and distributes the weight more evenly, promoting spinal health and preventing injuries," said Ajmera.

*Slouching after a meal can compress the internal organs, particularly the stomach and intestines, hindering the digestive process. According to Ajmera, sitting in Vajrasana after eating allows for better digestion and absorption of nutrients, also preventing discomfort or bloating.

Vajrasana involves sitting on the heels with the buttocks resting on the heels and the knees together. According to Dr Shanmugam, this gentle compression of the abdominal organs can stimulate peristalsis, the wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive system, promoting better digestion and preventing constipation.

*There is a belief in certain cultures that washing hair during the initial days of menstruation can disturb the body's natural energy flow. "However, from a scientific standpoint, there is no evidence to support these claims. It is generally safe to wash hair during menstruation unless you experience discomfort or temperature sensitivity during that time," said Dr Khan.
