MPOX CASE IN KERALA: 38-YEAR-OLD MAN DIAGNOSED WITH MPOX RETURNED FROM UAE LAST WEEK

A 38-year-old man who returned from the UAE last week has been diagnosed with Mpox, a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). The man was admitted to the government medical college hospital in Manjeri, Malappuram, on Monday after exhibiting symptoms of the disease. This marks the latest Mpox case in Kerala, heightening public health concerns.

State Health Minister Veena George confirmed on Wednesday that samples collected from the patient were tested at the virology lab at the government medical college hospital in Kozhikode. Minister George urged all individuals returning from abroad to seek immediate medical attention if they develop any Mpox symptoms.

The patient, a resident of Othayi village in Malappuram, had initially self-quarantined at home after noticing symptoms, reducing the risk of community spread. Following his admission to the hospital, health authorities have activated precautionary measures to contain the infection.

In response to the situation, isolation wards have been prepared in 14 hospitals across Kerala, including key medical colleges, to handle potential new cases and manage any escalation.

This development comes amid heightened global awareness of Mpox, after the World Health Organization declared it a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” last month, signaling the highest level of alert for the disease.

A similar case was reported last week in Delhi, where a patient with suspected Mpox symptoms was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. As more cases surface across India, health officials are intensifying efforts to curb the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
