LIVER EXPERT SLAMS THE USE OF TURMERIC AS MEDICINE; SAYS 98 PERCENT DOES NOT GET ABSORBED IN THE BODY

Turmeric – the deep, golden-orange spice is a superfood. A relative of ginger - turmeric comes from the root of a native Asian plant and is a staple in Indian kitchens, believed to be an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties and so, is used in ayurvedic and other forms of traditional medicine. However, according to Hepatologist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, “it is not medicine.”

But why does Dr. Philips – popularly known as Liver Doctor on X, say so? “Turmeric in the diet does not get absorbed in the body. In fact, 98 per cent of it is lost in the stool. The rest 2 per cent that is absorbed is very negligible to produce any clinically relevant action in the human body on any system,” he wrote on the social media site.

So, is Haldi healthy? Dr. Philips says, “Turmeric is used in the diet for colour and flavour, and nothing else.”

But more research is needed in that area.

Side effects of turmeric

While it is considered mostly safe for usage, when enjoyed in tea or food, if you are allergic to the spice, consuming it regularly can lead to a rash, hives, or abdominal pain.

Since most of the side effects are associated with very high concentrations of curcumin found in supplements like pills, capsules, and gummies – it is advisable to always consult with a doctor or certified dietician before starting any new dietary supplement, especially if you have an existing health condition or are taking other medications.
