GUA SHA BENEFITS FOR GLOWING SKIN, PAIN RELIEF: TIPS ON HOW IT WORKS, WHAT TO AVOID

Seen the buzz around gua sha lately? This traditional Chinese therapy, which means scraping away illness, is more than just a trend. Research now shows it can boost circulation, ease puffiness, and even relieve chronic pain.

According to Dr Sonali Kohli, Senior Consultant Dermatologist at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, gua sha works by stimulating microcirculation and lymphatic drainage. “It improves blood flow by up to 400 percent and eases muscle tension, which contributes to visible skin ageing,” she explains.

A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology backs this up: gua sha triggers healing responses and anti-inflammatory signals far beyond just the skin's surface.

Dr Kohli explains how Gua sha boosts your skin and health:

  • Reduce puffiness and face bloating: Gua sha stimulates lymphatic drainage, which helps reduce fluid build-up and puffiness, especially around the eyes and jawline.

  • Boost blood flow and skin glow: Increased circulation from even a 5-minute session can lead to improved skin tone, better oxygen delivery and a natural glow without makeup.

  • Relax tight facial muscles: Gua sha helps release facial tension that contributes to lines and jaw clenching. It’s particularly useful after a long day of screen time.

  • Support deeper product absorption: Massaging with a gua sha tool after applying vitamin C or hyaluronic acid can help skincare absorb more efficiently.

  • Improve skin elasticity: Gentle, regular use improves firmness and skin elasticity, says Dr Kohli. This can complement anti-ageing skincare routines.

  • Help with neck and shoulder pain: Beyond the face, gua sha can relieve stiffness in areas like the neck and shoulders by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation.

What to keep in mind:

Always use a proper tool, jade, rose quartz or bian stone, and never use it dry. “Avoid applying too much pressure. Gua sha is meant to be therapeutic, not aggressive,” says Dr Kohli. If you have eczema, psoriasis, or active acne, give it a miss until the skin settles.
