HZ WOMEN OF THE MONTH: HOW A SIL BATTA LED TO THE CREATION OF ONE OF THE MOST AUTHENTIC PAHADI SALTS

Shashi Raturi is the owner of nutritious and organic flavoured salts, known as Namakwali. She began this project by bringing women from various parts of her state on board and providing hand-grounded pahadi salt which is made on a traditional stone grinder (known as sil batta).

This week, Shashi Raturi, the founder and director of the Namakwali brand spoke about her organic brand’s journey. And apart from building up her organic salt brand she also loves nature and plants flowers and trees. Take a look:

Her Inspiration

When we asked her about her inspiration for the organic brand Namakmwali, she said she started her brand in 2018. When she and her neighbourhood women used to meet and practice for her Uttarakhand folk dance, some women used to bring salt made on sil batta for tasting. So other ladies said that they too want to do this. This is how this idea came to her mind with the perspective that it requires a lot of effort and hard work to make salt on a stone sil batta. So why not get paid for it and that's how she started this brand. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram helped her a lot to grow this brand.

How Is This Salt Made

On asking how they make this salt she said, they use a traditional sil batta to make this salt. This sil batta was extensively used by our mothers, great grandmothers. It also said that it is her way to preserve the tradition of making salt and chutneys on sil batta. She uses salt mixed with different spices and herbs to make flavoured salts. She aims to spread and make it available across India and give all the organic taste of flavoured salts.

People's Reaction Towards Her Success

She further said that she is thankful and appreciates people for loving her work that a full women-oriented team is doing. She also said that there are a lot of people who visit her and the team to see and appreciate how they make flavoured salts.

Her Advice For Women

She also shared a piece of advice for all women and said that after a certain age, women start thinking that they can't do more work now. No work is small but it's not like that and they can surely fulfil and live their dreams. Women can do every work they like and no age can stop them if they are working with dedication and love their work.
