But does it work?

For the unversed, apple cider vinegar is made when apple cider is fermented with yeast and other helpful bacteria. "The fermentation process creates a compound in the vinegar called ‘acetic acid’ and ‘malic acid’ both of which are known for their antibacterial and antifungal properties," said Dr Vandana Punjabi, dermatologist and trichologist at Khar, and Nanavati Hospital.

Adding, Dr Stuti Khare Shukla, dermatologist and Dermato-surgeon said that from a dermatology perspective, soaking feet in apple cider vinegar has shown promising benefits in certain cases, offering a natural and accessible solution for foot care.

"Further scientific research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms. The acidic nature, along with the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar help create an environment that may discourage the growth of certain fungi and bacteria. Additionally, the mild exfoliating properties of vinegar may aid in removing dead skin cells, promoting a smoother and healthier appearance of the feet," said Dr Shukla.

However, apple cider vinegar should be used with caution and in moderation, Dr Shukla warned. "Excessive or prolonged exposure to vinegar may cause skin irritation or dryness. As with any treatment, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist," said Dr Shukla.

Concurred Dr Punjabi, adding "We must remember that it is highly acidic in nature and can cause burns when applied directly to the skin for long periods of time. Hence it should always be diluted with water and used for a shorter duration, such as 15-20 minutes. It should be avoided on sensitive skin and open wounds," said Dr Punjabi.

Experts also suggest that it is recommended to consult your dermatologist if home remedies are not working for you.
