In an age where multitasking and constant connectivity have become the norm, our ability to retain information can often feel stretched thin. Whether recalling a name during a conversation or remembering where you left your keys, memory retention is critical in daily life. While occasionally forgetting things is normal, adopting certain habits can help enhance your brain’s ability to store and retrieve information.

But what are the most effective habits for improving memory retention, and how can you seamlessly incorporate them into your routine?

Dr Kadam Nagpal, head, neuroimmunology and senior neurologist at Salubritas Medcentre, tells indianexpress.com, “Memory is the process by which information is encoded, stored, and retrieved from the brain. Retention plays a critical role in this process, as it allows individuals to recall and understand past events, which helps modulate behaviour in the present. Memory can be retained on both a short-term and long-term basis.”

Why do some people struggle with memory retention?

Dr Nagpal states that the most important factor in memory retention is attention. “In today’s busy world, individuals are often exposed to numerous stimuli, making it difficult to focus. If someone is distracted, like when multitasking, they may not properly encode and store information in their memory.”

In addition, workplace pressures, anxiety, and mental health challenges can further diminish an individual’s attention and, in turn, their memory. Many people come to us complaining of memory issues, but often, the root cause is a lack of attention due to stress or anxiety.

Does lack of memory retention point towards any neurological issues?

Neurological disorders can lead to memory retention problems, notes Dr Nagpal. “These issues need to be assessed and evaluated early to determine if the individual is at risk of cognitive decline or dementia in the future. In individuals over 70, for example, we often encounter complaints of short-term memory loss, difficulty with retention, and challenges with recall. In such cases, a detailed assessment may reveal that the person is suffering from types of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease.”

Six daily habits that can naturally improve memory retention

Dr Nagpal lists the following daily habits people can follow to improve memory retention:

Stay Organised: Keeping a daily planner helps prevent forgetting important tasks and reinforces memory by requiring individuals to write down information. Writing stimulates the brain to remember things in greater detail.

Get Adequate Sleep: Aiming for 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night supports the consolidation of memories. Sleep strengthens memory retention by allowing the brain to process and store information.

Focus and Minimise Distractions: By paying attention to the task at hand and avoiding multitasking, individuals can ensure that the information they’re exposed to is properly retained in memory. This prevents the cognitive overload that can result from divided attention.

Practice Mental Exercises: Brain-stimulating activities like puzzles, reading, or learning new skills can improve memory by promoting brain activity and strengthening neural connections.

Regular Physical Activity: Exercise improves blood flow to the brain and supports neurogenesis, enhancing memory retention and cognitive function.

Reduce Stress: Managing stress through relaxation techniques or mindfulness can improve memory by reducing the negative impact of stress hormones on the brain.
