MALAIKA ARORA WORKS TOWARDS ENHANCING HIP MOBILITY WITH THIS CHALLENGING YOGA FLOW

There is no denying the fact that Malaika Arora takes fitness extremely seriously. Proof of the same is her social media feed, where she regularly shares glimpses of her workouts, primarily yoga. In a similar vein, the 49-year-old recently took to Instagram to give a peek into her latest exercise session where she can be seen doing some hip-opening asanas, including a variation of the 90-90 stretch.

In the caption, she wrote, "Today’s challenging flow is all about enhancing your hip mobility and with it improving: stability, flexibility, and strength." Take a look.

According to her, hip mobility exercises not only help release pent-up emotions but also increase athletic performance and prevent lower back pain. "Try it for yourself," she added.

Urging everyone, especially women, to maintain hip mobility, yoga trainer Ira Trivedi told indianexpress.com, "As hip problems are rampant, especially in women after 35 due to child birth, osteoporosis, etc, doing these drills help enhance hip-joint mobility, and also strengthen the hip flexors in the long run."

Previously, Malaika had shared her favourite form of yoga and demonstrated a set of exercises using a surprising prop -- yoga stick or a danda.

"Danda yoga is one of my favourite forms of yoga," Malaika captioned a video which showed her acing yoga asanas while holding the stick, as well as placing the stick on her shoulders.

Malaika went on to list some of the reasons for using the stick

- It's a fabulous workout to reduce belly fat, especially the around your waist.

- It gives a great stretch to the muscles of the arms, legs, and spine

- It relaxes the body thoroughly.

"This week, try adding a prop to your workout, something as simple as a bottle of water or a towel. It will enhance your workout and give you a welcome break," Malaika added.

Why should we use props?

Props can be yoga bricks, yoga belt, and bolsters. In Iyengar Yoga, there are so many different kinds of props -- benches, and ropes. All of these help us in our yoga practice. Just like that, a yoga stick is used to help us get deeper in the postures with correct alignment because human bodies being different, not all yoga asanas can be adapted by everyone at the first go, Trivedi told indianexpress.com.

Considering that in modern times most of us are always on our desks, and phones, pressure is on the human body. "Human bodies are not biologically developed for sitting for long periods of times which creates undue stress and pressure. It leads to back pain, knee, hip pain, and other such stressors. It is a long process of wear and tear. Even the best of us don't have the perfect alignment. Props will allow you to feel the posture correctly," added Trivedi.

According to Trivedi, props lend more support to the postures. "When we support the posture, we are able to remain in the posture for a longer duration of time, be more comfortable, while also allowing the posture to give us the right benefits because they are engaging and working on the right muscles," elucidated Trivedi.

Just like Malaika, Trivedi advised using props like a stick to stretch the arms, and open up the shoulders and the upper body. "I encourage everyone to use yoga props," said Trivedi.
