WHY OUR IMMUNITY DROPS DURING SEASONAL CHANGES? HERE’S HOW TO STAY SAFE

Rapidly changing weather and dropping temperatures are causing a significant increase in flu cases, along with the spread of various other viral and bacterial infections. Health experts attribute this spike to weakened immune systems during seasonal transitions.

These changes can weaken the body’s natural defences, making it more vulnerable to infections and illnesses. Let’s understand the reasons behind this.

During seasonal changes, individuals often experience colds, coughs, fevers, sore throats, or fatigue, primarily due to weakened immunity. Sudden temperature shifts disrupt the body’s internal balance and strain the immune system, increasing the risk of infections.

The body expends extra energy to adjust to temperature fluctuations, which further stresses the immune system. Additionally, factors such as increased mold, viruses, and allergens in the air can confuse the immune system, impairing its function.

Research published in the British Journal of Medical Practitioners (BJMP) indicates that cold air and low temperatures weaken the upper layers of the lungs, throat, and skin, key organs that act as shields for the body. When these protective layers are damaged, viruses and bacteria gain easier entry.

A drop in body temperature by just 1°C can decrease the immune response by 5-6 times. Seasonal changes also disrupt daily routines, leading to insufficient rest and heightened mental stress, which alters cortisol and other hormone levels, further pressuring the immune system and weakening the body’s natural defence.

To strengthen immunity during changing seasons, health experts recommend lifestyle and dietary adjustments. Consuming warm foods and staying hydrated during winter is crucial. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can boost immunity, particularly vitamin C-rich foods like lemons, gooseberries, and citrus fruits.

Regular exercise, about 30-60 minutes daily, also enhances immune function. Ensure 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night and manage stress effectively. If any health issues arise, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
