Herbs and spices are staples in Indian kitchens. While the West raves thyme, rosemary, and dill, closer home, cilantro, basil, and fennel take the spotlight. Coriander, in particular, offers multiple wellness benefits. According to Dr Charu Arora, registered dietitian and nutrition educator, coriander is a functional food that promotes overall health.
"Linalool in coriander is the main compound responsible for the aroma as well as the medicinal values. Its rich nutritional profile, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and calming properties help provide holistic health benefits," Arora said.
Coriander juice, made from the leaves of the coriander plant, offers several health benefits, but Arora stresses pairing it with a balanced diet and disciplined lifestyle. Its benefits include:
However, Arora also said that regular consumption may pose the following risks:
Allergic Reactions: May trigger allergic reactions such as skin rashes, breathing difficulties, or stomach discomfort in some people.
Lower Blood Pressure: For those who have low blood pressure or are on medications for hypertension, regular intake might cause it to drop too low.
Excessive Detoxification: Daily use as a detoxifier could lead to depletion of certain essential minerals or electrolytes, especially if you're not replenishing them with a well-rounded diet.
Kidney Function Impact: Coriander is a diuretic and may stimulate the kidneys to excrete more water and salt. Excessive use may strain the kidneys or lead to electrolyte imbalances.
